FAQ
Common questions answered
What watermarking blend modes are available?
We support: Normal (replaces underlying pixels), Multiply (darkens, works on light backgrounds), Screen (lightens, works on dark backgrounds), Overlay (contrast enhancement), and Soft Light (subtle blending). For maximum robustness against removal, we recommend using the Disposal Method option to embed watermark in key frames rather than every frame.
How does GIF palette limitation affect watermark quality?
GIF uses a maximum 256-color palette. When you add a watermark, the tool must either dither (distribute colored pixels to simulate intermediate colors) or quantize (map to nearest palette entry). Logos with gradients or photographic elements will lose fidelity. For logos requiring smooth gradients, use PNG input which handles alpha transparency natively.
How can I make my watermark more resistant to removal?
Simple techniques: place watermark at 30-40% opacity (visible but less tempting to clone out), use non-repeating positions across frames, apply slight geometric distortion (1-2% skew), and use the "brightness/contrast adaptation" option which adjusts watermark based on underlying content luminance.
What is the difference between visible and invisible watermarking?
Visible watermarks are embeddable logos/text overlay. Invisible watermarks embed steganographic data (typically in LSB of pixel values) that survives format changes but requires specialized software to extract. We currently support visible watermarking. For forensic-level invisible watermarking, you'd need specialized tools like Digimarc or academic steganography libraries.
Why does my watermark appear differently across GIF frames?
GIF uses adaptive palette optimization per frame. A watermark rendered on frame 1 may map to different palette indices than on frame 5 if that frame's palette is dominated by different colors. Use the "Force global palette" option to enforce consistent color mapping across all frames, though this may reduce overall GIF color fidelity.
What image formats work best for watermark source files?
PNG with alpha channel (32-bit) preserves transparency perfectly. SVG is rasterized at canvas resolution. JPEG introduces compression artifacts that become visible when overlaid. WebP offers best quality-to-size ratio if the browser supports it. For text watermarks, we render directly from font files for maximum sharpness.
